Re: H.M.S Rochester
The city of Rochester arms have a lion passant or in chief and a mural crown. The Rochester arms are unusual for the inclusion of a letter of the alphabet. The lion recalls that Rochester was originally a royal borough. The arms for the ship, without the lion and with a naval crown are taken in hono...

Lovely candlesticks. On the viewer's left the quartered arms of COGAN and BLACKBURN (Argent a fess nebuly between three mullets sable) can be seen. On the viewer's right are the arms of NANGLE (Azure, three lozenges in fess or.) A casual Google Search for Cogan and Nangle bring up Irish families. Th...

The Art of Heraldry (1904) and The British Herald (1830) both remind us that a viscount has a coronet of nine pearls.

Re: London Fork, 1837. Is the mark on the back a family crest?
The British Herald, or Cabinet of Armorial Bearings etc by Thomas Robson (1830) gives only one family by name of DOHTIG. It is a very old Saxon name which means valiant or strong. I could not find anything about the family. The name is now seen as Doughty. The crest was blazoned as a dexter arm, ves...

Re: Anthony Nelme paten
This is a coat of arms; a crest is the decoration that goes on top. These arms are not showing a crest. They appear to be for a member of the NORTH family. Because it is in the shape of a lozenge, we know it belongs to a lady. We can see the field is blue but the tinctures for the lion and fleur de ...

Re: Help with crest please
The crest is an eagle displayed. It could also be blazoned as an eagle with wings displayed and elevated. Eagles are popular and this can be found as a crest for one of the branches of the Moseley family, and one of the Williams family, and quite a few branches of the Browne family. There may be oth...

Re: Help with Gorham coin mark.
I've just acquired my first, what I believe to be, Gorham coin silver open salt. So naturally I came to this page wanting to know more about the marks. After reading through the posts, I can only say that the owner got an online appraisal and not an in-person silver test. It must be done scientifica...

Re: crown on silver french pot
Found it! The problem was thinking it was an anchor below the crown, but it is an L and it's reverse, as it is used as a cipher for artistic balance. The symbol is for the society known as ''Hospitalité Notre Dame de Lourdes" (Hospitality of Our Lady of Lourdes). It is a volunteer organization ...

Lovely item. The engraving is a crest, which is the top part of a coat of arms. It also shows the coronet of an earl. It seems to me that this is the crest of KEITH, the Earls of Kintore, in the peerage of Scotland. Kind regards.

It is a souvenir of France. I have seen the same symbol on two different brooches and a napkin ring. Unfortunately, nobody knew what the initials stood for. I have not been able to solve the mystery, either. Kind regards.

Re: Unknown Gorham pattern
A multi-motif pattern means all the dinner forks have one pattern say with Hercules, all the salad forks have one pattern that is different from the dinner forks, say with a cherub. The teaspoons have their own pattern, etc. They harmonize because the rest of the design elements match. It is very co...

Re: Forbes Silver Co. Monogram
I see the letters D E T C in the script font similar to that used by Towle. I don't think the E is used as an ampersand because there is no vertical line through it. I think it is similar to the initials of Neil deGrasse Tyson, although his would start with a lower case, ie: deGT. Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm not sure this is a Latin (or Roman) alphabet. Then perhaps it would be TA ? I've tried some of the Cyrillic styles, but I'm not that familiar with them. Since this was made in Vienna (Wien) I've looked over a map and tried researching alphabets of neighboring countries, such as Hungary. I'm sorr...

Re: Coat of Arms on English made 1794 Sterling Goblet
I’ve seen a set of goblets with this armorial in an auction by John Moran Auctioneers from the estate of Ernest A. Bryant III. They were listed as assayed at London, date letter B for 1797. Eight of the 12 had gold washed bowls. The engraving of the bear was even worse and gave it a bad swayback. Un...
