Re: Finnish Maker KPL (?)
Enjoy the holiday! To finish this, the key here is exactly that, the old verses new. Apologies for not making that clear. I was responding to a modern website issue. No place in this forum where Assay Masters and hand punched hallmarks of old are pondered, discussed, and identified by scholars such ...

Re: Finnish Maker KPL (?)
Hello Again, Yes, there is some misunderstanding here. No claim is made that every assay office (AO) officially offers the public marks that are incorrect or that every instance of a published hallmark is distorted to mislead would-be forgers. The statement was only meant to offer a perspective as t...

Re: Finnish Maker KPL (?)
Dear Qrt.S, It is important to note that while what may appear to be illogical for an assay office to post marks that are not true to the strike, it actually can be quite intentional. Consider the potential risk for good forgeries if every assay office published publicly their exact hallmarks. Most ...

Re: Has anyone seen this mark before?
Hi Warren, Here the only pictures have of the item, hopefully it will help. The marks are in the base of this small bowl that has no embellishments at all. It almost appears to be a tray from a balance it is so plain. The second picture is blurry but you can see it is very plan and measures only abo...

Re: Need help identifying this silver candlestick
Hello Hjulben, The 3 hallmarks are upside down but read that the item is of 900 silver from Egypt. With the blurred image of the date mark... if it has one dot in the center than it was hallmarked sometime from late 1980 to the end of 1981. If it is with two dots then it is from mid 1992 to mid 1994...

Hi Sunnyices2,
AG2012 has provided you with the main information your bangle's hallmarks convey - Cairo Assay Office, 900 silver, but the date letter in the hallmark was used from October 1989 to Sept. 1990.
Hope that fits as the last piece in your puzzle. Enjoy your dolphin bangle!

Has anyone seen this mark before?
Hello. Has anyone seen this mark before? This is an oddity that continues to elude me. Any information is more than I have now. The mark on the right could be Arabic or ? It was stamped into the base of a small bowl that was not tested but made of a silver or silver like white metal. http://www.hall...

Re: Help! Identify hallmark on (old) earrings?
Hello, The hallmarks are incomplete most likely because of light nature of the design and construction. Assay offices often would err on the side of caution and strike a delicate piece with the most important mark first and then decide if another mark is safe to strike or not. Egypt did not use or e...

Re: Help With South African Silver Please
Hi If I understand the outstanding question is the date letter. As we know it, the South African Mint had date letters from 1948 to what we believe is 1988. The earlier marks were stylized as in the first 2 of the set of 3 images above. The bowl appears to have a P date letter that matches to the 19...

Hello Kristi,
Is it possible to have you make the images of the hallmarks larger? We cannot see what hallmark is on the point, and possibly another angle of the other marks will reveal additional details that will help with their ID.
thanks,
dnl

Hello raSmith, With the Portuguese trademarks, there is generally a single letter that stands out and makes it much easier to research if listed. Your image is not clear enough to know for sure what that letter is. Can you either look at it yourself and tell us the letter or reshoot the larger mark ...

Re: Large Repousse Silver or Silver plated?
Hi Sonny, The mark that you have here is Egyptian. I am told that it was used for a short time (2008-2009) for domestic sale and abroad. It was struck in the Cairo Assay Office and you are correct in that the fineness is 900 silver as per the 9 and 2 dots on the side. The left side has a stylized lo...

Hello ejenie, I am never really sure when it has been too long to offer a reply but I am compelled to comment on this post, that just popped up in a search, because it is a bit off track. This mark is from South Africa. ET+ is the maker, STG is for sterling, the blob of a mark to the right of the ST...

Re: Hallmark assistance on bracelet
Hello Treasurestar30, The item is silver, as you know, and as indicated by the center hallmark of the lotus flower which is Egypt's country hallmark for silver. The mark on the left is the purity hallmark with 80 in Arabic numerals meaning that the item is 800 or 80% silver. The town of assay, the A...

Hello minihall2, Yes, your image is too small for this forum but your clarity of image makes up for size in this case. Yes, this is an Egyptian hallmark. It is comprised of the fineness as noted - 925 (sterling) with the assay office mark above the 925 which is really too small to read but may be Ca...

Hi Warren,
Alas no, the only language the series is in now is English. Maybe someday there will be the push for more languages. As a publication focused on imagery, the need may not be as strong.
Garo's book is in Turkish and English.
cheers,
