ARCHIBALD WHALE
King Street, South Shields
Archibald Whale, watchmaker and silversmith, of King Street, South Shields, died at the infectious hospital on Friday from which has stated to have been Asiatic cholera. He was taken ill on Sunday week last, and was attended by a doctor, but his condition became so serious that he was removed to the hospital. He was buried late on Friday night. It is said that deceased, who was fifty years of age, had been eating some imported fruit.

Samuel Hume
Jeweller and Silversmith 17 Elvet Bridge, Durham
I found 3 references for Samuel Hume in Durham trade directory PDF's:
Hume Samuel, 17 Elvet bridge, Durham jewellers
Hume Samuel, 17 Elvet bridge, Durham watch & clockmakers
Hume Samuel, watch maker, I7 Elvet bridge
Also the Index to obituaries in the "Durham Directory" 1910 has:
HUME, S., jeweller and silversmith of Elvet Bridge, Durham died 4 May 1909 (see M29/1)
"Hume, S." but of "North Road, Durham ", watchmmaker is referenced in our Forum by Dognose and below is the box silk that stimulated my "local" interest.
Apart from the death record there is little dating for Samuel Hume's working period. If the silver spoon and fork set that were in the silk lined box were always in the box, the item was retailed around 1898.

JAMES or JOHN MITCHELL
Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland
At Durham Assizes, last week, Alexander Magner was tried for a burglary at Bishopwearmouth. During the night of the 7th February, the shop of Mr. Mitchell, a watchmaker and jeweller, was ransacked, and a very large amount of property was carried off. The thieves were not traced, but a number of investigations took place before the Magistrates. Mr. Mitchell could produce no invoices nor regular account-books, and the Police did not perceive marks of a forcible entry into his shop ; the consequence was, that an impression was produced that there had been no robbery at all — that the jeweller had robbed himself, with an improper motive. Some months after, a number of the stolen watches were found in the possession of Magner, who was living at Hull. In the course of the trial, Mr. Mitchell showed that he really had not been in the habit of keeping accounts ; he had been twenty years in business, and had succeeded his father ; many of the watches stolen had been left to be repaired, and he had to make their losses good to the owners ; so that he could have no motive for robbing himself. The counsel for the defence stuck to the insinuation of a mock robbery, and urged that means had been used to get the watches into the hands of Magner, and thus clear the prosecutor at that man’s expense. The Jury found the prisoner guilty of “receiving the goods knowing them to be stolen.” In passing sentence, Mr. Justice Wightman felt bound to state that he had come to the conclusion that Mr. Mitchell had really been robbed as he alleged. Magner was sentenced to be transported for seven years. The convict swooned.

Dinsdale Carlisle, Watchmakers & Jewellers
29 Market Place Kendal, Westmorland, (now in the county of Cumbria. North West England)
Above is the finial mark on a Electroplated teaspoon and a barometer likely retailed by "Carlisles".
D.Carlisle is recorded at 29 Market Place, Kendal as a Watch & Clock maker in Kelly's Directory of Westmorland, 1910 but not in Kelly's 1914 Cumberland & Westmoreland.
Dinsdale Carlisle is at 29 Market Place Kendal as Watchmakers & Jewellers in Bulmer's History, Topography & Directory of Westmorland for 1885.
Dinsdale Carlisle is mentioned in another post in this same section of our Forum giving a date of Oct. 1891.

Re: The Newcastle and North of England Trade - Information, Advertisements, Examples
Charles Harrison Watch maker & Jeweller Spectacle Retailer / Optician
1 Market Place Morpeth possibly also 1 Bridge Street (see later), Northumberland
There is a little bit of speculation here but below is an electroplated teaspoon that I have owned for several years, proclaiming "Harrison Morpeth"
This spoon appears to have been made by Walker & Hall of Sheffield but does not carry any of that company's "dating" marks, apart from possible loose dating with the trademark "W&H" older style pennant flag.
A Charles Harrison is noted at 1 Market Place in Kelly's Directory of Northumberland, 1914, as a Watch maker & Jeweller. He is not in the next earliest directory I had access to. In Kelly's Directory of Northumberland, 1894 at the Market Place, Morpeth we find a watch maker "Agnes Harrison".
There is a reference to a connection at https://www.clockswatches.co.uk › “show page” and relates to a multi-generational watch making "Harrison Family of Northumberland".
"Agnes Harrison (nee Richardson) (born c1821), of Warkworth and Morpeth
Agnes was the widow of John (b1826). She took over the business following the death of her husband in 1875. She is listed in the census returns as a clock and or watch maker up to and including 1901. An interesting article, dated about 1894, describes the Morpeth business as being run by Mrs. Agnes Harrison and her son Charles. Agnes died in 1906."
Warkworth is a coastal village some 15-16 miles North of Morpeth and the article suggests Charles Harrison's father "John" started his watch making business there around 1850 and moved to Morpeth in mid 1860's. Another reference states Charles continued the business, more as a jeweller until the late 1930's.
Here are "transcripts” of 3 adverts from the Morpeth Herald at the beginning of the 20th century. In 2 Chas Harrison is retailing spectacles and eye glasses some branded as "H.L.". He is calling himself an "optician" in the later November 1903 ad.
In the 3rd ad, he is, or a jeweller called Harrison is, at that different address, 1 Bridge Street. At this place and at this time "they" were selling "Coronation Jewellery". King Edward V11's coronation was late August 1902. Perhaps another premises was required to stock what we would now call memorabilia on a possible temporary basis. Bridge Street and the Market place are in fact in very close proximity.

This multi-generational family concern was based in the commercial centre of Darlington. High Row had other similar businesses noted by Dognose at
search.php?st=0&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&keyw ... lington%3A
You will see an "R.Johnson" is referenced there circa 1864
Hagar & Co.'s 1851 Directory of the County of Durham, lists Robert Johnson at 35 High Row as Clock Watch Maker, Jeweller & Silversmith
Slater's 1855 Commercial Directory of Durham, Northumberland & Yorkshire, has Robert Johnson at High Row and listed as Clock and Watch Maker, Jeweller.
In the 1858 Post Office Directory of Northumberland & Durham, Robert Johnson is at 35 High Row Darlington as Watch Maker and silversmith.
This is an auction catalogue image described as a Robert Johnson Darlington longcase clock.
Sometime between 1864 and 1890 the firm became Robert & Thomas Johnson 35 High Row Darlington as the 1890 Kelly's Directory of Durham lists them there as Jewellers, thought the next image suggests watch making was still part of their repertoire.
This electroplated teaspoon also carries the R&T Johnson name. Made by Dixons of Sheffield but with no definite dating potential.
By 1914 another "Johnsons" was at 35 High Row. Kelly's 1914 Directory of Durham had “R. Johnson & Son” as jewellers there. In early 1905 R&T Johnson still had the business as shown by this advert from a "program" for a fund raiser event for the "Darlington Cricket and Athletic Club"
We also see from the ad “Johnsons” were “established 1828” and it looks like the 20th century change to R. Johnson & Son was the possible completion of a circle as a “Johnson & Son” was referenced in a PDF of "Trade Directories 1822-23 & 1833-4 N Yorkshire & S Durham ...". Listed there for 1833-1834 at High Row Darlington DUR., is "Johnson watch & clock maker (& Son) jeweller".
I found no information for the date of ending of this particular Johnson family concern. I did find an additional loose end though as in the 1914 Kelly’s guide at 83 Skinnergate, Darlington, there was a "H Johnson" in business as a jeweller. Skinnergate was not far from High Row but had much less kudos. No more information found.
