What do these marks mean?
I have some Italian silver flatware made by Zaramella Argenti. On one side of the handle, there are the usual Italian hallmarks. But on the other side, there are a letter "R" in a square which is then followed by "25g". I googled but could not find the answer. Does anyone know anything about these marks? Thanks!

Hi,
I hope I do not disappoint you.
What you have is a resin base covered with a layer of silver. To identify such pieces and so that they are not to be confused with solid silver items, as they do contain a full set of Italian marks, the Italian government required some extra marks to be struck. These extra marks are a 'R' within a square, this stands for 'Riempito' (filled), and also a set of figures that indicate the amount of silver applied, in grams (1÷2 g, 2÷3 g, 3÷5g, etc.). These are not exact weights, but must fit into range stated by each mark.
I think in your case the handles contain 25 grams of silver.

This is not silverplated. There are legit silver hallmarks on the other side of the handle.

Re: What do these marks mean?
Thanks for your answer. I managed to track down the manufacturer. They confirmed that these are silvehandled dining knives, but they give rather vague answers to my question. They only said that the handle was hollow, and "R 25g" meant that the weight of the handle was about 25 grams.
I am totally fine with the knives not being 100% silver. I got these from a family member, and they are very nice looking.
Cheer!

Just curious, what are the silver marks on the other side? Would you be able to share a picture?SilverBuggy wrote:This is not silverplated. There are legit silver hallmarks on the other side of the handle.Qrt.S wrote:Here some more info regarding silver plate:

Thanks for sharing. These marks look legit to me. However, why they would mark it 25g on the other side is a mystery to me.
Re: What do these marks mean?
The answer for the 25 g is given by Dognose.

Thanks, Peter. I must've missed dognose's post earlier; that makes sense.
