Disappearance of a Jeweller's Traveller. — Benjamin Tucks, traveller for Mr. Charles Miller, watchmaker and jeweller, High Street, Galashiels, has been missing since August 19. Tucks left Galashiels on August 12 with jewellery to the value of about £100 for Leadhills, Lanarkshire, and as he failed to communicate with his employer before the former date, or to forward a remittance of his receipts, he being empowered to collect accounts, Mr. Miller got uneasy, and left on that date for Leadhills, where he learned that Tucks had just taken train for Peebles. Thither Mr. Miller went, but only to find that Tucks had again disappeared. The matter is now in the hands of the police, who have issued handbills throughout the country giving a description of the missing man, and ordering his apprehension if found, but as yet no trace of his whereabouts has been discovered.

A Former Glasgow Jeweler Charged with Smuggling
Robert C. Walker who says he was a jeweler of Glasgow, Scotland, was a passenger on the Teutonic which arrived in New York late Wednesday evening. After Walker's baggage was examined and as he was attempting to leave the steamer, he was searched by Customs Inspectors Brown and Donahue, who found concealed on his person, one ladies' gold watch, 19 silver watches and a gold bracelet.
The goods were seized and Walker arrested. He was arraigned before Commissioner Shields in the Post Office building and held for examination in $1,500 bail.

Perhaps one of the most massive and handsome silver vases made for a very long time was that recently turned out by Messrs. J. Crichton and Co., George Street, Edinburgh, and which was presented to the Earl of Mar and Kellie on the occasion of his marriage, by his lordship's mineral tenants in Clackmannanshire, its total weight being 260 ozs.

John Thomas Laidlaw noted as partner in 1910. Later the business of Johnston Sandlan and Austin Sandlan.

"Prior to the First World War the shop at No 1 belonged to Hawick-born Alexander Sutherland Lawson -watchmaker, jeweller, silversmith, optician, shipping agent, magistrate and JP - who had commenced his business in May 1864."
Below is an advert seen in the "Southern Counties' Register and Directory" covering Berwickshire in the Scottish borders 1866.
This 1866 advert does not mention silversmith, unlike the Historic Environment Scotland, Portal reference relating to 1 Sandbed (LB34666) that I quoted at the start. The website "silvermakersmarks.co.uk" does not have an entry for Alex Lawson or Alex S.Lawson for Edinburgh (over 50 miles away) or in its provincial Scottish listings. There is however unknown "A.L" recorded on an imported gold watch case 1911 at Glasgow (over 100 miles away). Below is a recept from 1911 for attention to 3 house clocks, shown in old UK money, less than a current pound/euro. Also show is the finial mark on the teaspoon that I photoed as being interesting, quite a while ago.

A further quote now from Historic Environment Scotland's Statement of Special Interest- 1 Sandbed Hawick
"A well-proportioned, virtually unaltered early-19th-century residential and commercial block situated in a prominent position at the centre of Hawick, at the corner of Sandbed and Howegate. Sandbed was the focal point of the Burgh and the site of its marketplace until 1815, when the market was moved to Tower Knowe in preparation for the laying-out of Buccleuch Street as the main road south."
