Part Chronology of Ellis/Depree/Young of Exeter High Street, Businesses

These names are mentioned elsewhere on the forum but are here in a one easy to open pack.

1844.Pigot & Co.'s Directory Part 1 Berks to Glos

...................... Ellis Henry, 200 High St silversmiths & jewellers,, watch & clock makers.

1850 History, Gazetteer & Directory of Devon

.....................Ellis Hy. and Sons, 200 High Street watch & clock makers.

....................Ellis Henry & Son, 200 High Street silversmiths and jewellers

Henry Ellis & Son registered a silver mark at the Exeter Assay Office. Items seen 1847-1850 are Brooch, flatware, skewer from High Street, Exeter

1856 Exeter Pocket Journal & Almanac,

...................Ellis, Brothers, goldsmiths, High Street Exeter

Henry Samuel Ellis registered a silver mark at the Exeter Assay Office. Items seen 1853 -1858 are Ladle, spoon, Henry Samuel Ellis is mentioned in Exeter records 1853 only, died 1878

Below is an extract of information from the Royal Albert Memorial Museum relating to Henry Ellis

“...Birmingham, Sheffield and London also forced many West Country goldsmiths out of business. Henry Ellis (d.1871) was one of the few Exeter goldsmiths to thrive during this period. In 1814 he opened his first shop in the High Street. A watchmaker by trade, Ellis retailed goods made locally and in Birmingham and London. In 1847 his eldest son, Henry Samuel, registered the firm’s design for ‘Patent Safety Chain Brooches’, some of which were made from silver mined at Comb Martin on Exmoor. After the purchase of five brooches by Queen Victoria, Ellis & Son were appointed silversmiths in ordinary to the Queen in 1848 and exhibited at the Great Exhibition in 1851.”

1878-79 History, Gazetteer & Directory of Devon

....................Ellis, Depree & Tucker watch and clock makers, jewellers, goldsmiths and silversmiths 200 High Street

.....................Ellis Brothers watchmakers and jewellers. 200 High Street

The date of Henry Samuel Ellis’s death is suggested as 1878 and could explain the 2 different entries here.

1889 Kelly's Directory of Devon,

..................DEPREE FREDERICK TEMPLER, 17 &18 High Street, goldsmith & diamond merchant.

Post Office Directory of Exeter, 1895-96

.................F.Templer.Depree 17 & 18 High Street & Bedford St. Gold & silversmith

................Depree, F. T., 200, High Street Goldsmiths.

Although F.Templer Depree is the only name I found in various directories around this period, it is likely the firm was still “Ellis, Depree & Tucker”. A post referenced below offers extra information on this issue and also steps to other associated posts.

1902 Kelly's Directory of Devon & Cornwall, [Part 1: Devon]

.................Depree, Raeburn & Young, Silversmiths and Jewellers Watch and Clock Maker 17 & 18 High Street & Bedford St.

1912 Post Office Directory of Exeter & Suburbs

................Depree & Young Ltd, Silversmiths and Jewellers. I7 & I8, High St

1919 Kelly's Directory of Devon

..................Depree & Young Limited (estab.1812), diamond merchants, goldsmiths, jewellers, watch & clock makers & silversmiths; designs & estimates for church turret clocks free,17 & 18 High Street & Bedford Street.

Sometime between this 1919 directory entry and 1930, the concern had turned into John Young & Co. Ltd, and in that latter year it was acquired by another south/southwest jeweller and silversmith, William Bruford & Son.

Ellis & Son - Exeter - 1850

ASPARAGUS-FORK

This useful article has been invented by Messrs. Ellis and Son, silversmiths to the Queen, at Exeter.

It is a good substitute for the present method of conveying that delicious vegetable to the mouth. It is simple and pretty, and will be found extremely useful for the purpose for which it has been designed.
