A rather original and striking advertisement emanating from the well-known firm of Messrs, G. Paterson, watchmakers and jewellers, Alloway Street, Ayr, is at present appearing in the local newspapers, and I should imagine that this is greatly catching the eye of the public. The advertisement is amusingly headed "Sick Watches," and in the explanatory letterpress which follows we are told "watches and clocks get out of sorts just as human beings do, and they require skilled treatment just the same. There is a hospital for sick watches at 38, Alloway Street, and an able surgeon who understands their ailments, whatever is wrong. If you have a sick watch or clock and want it made right at a reasonable charge and upheld for one year, bring it to us."

We learn that Flight-Sergeant George Mackie, of the Royal Flying Corps (son of Mr. William Mackie, watchmaker and jeweller, Hatton, Aberdeenshire) has been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. He served his apprenticeship with Mr. Davidson, New Deer, and was employed in Alloa when he enlisted. The gallant Flight-Sergeant has seen a lot of active service since he donned the uniform a considerable time ago, and he thoroughly deserves the new honour which has been bestowed on him.

It has been intimated that the representatives of the late Mr. Andrew McKenzie, watchmaker, jeweller and optician, Turriff, have transferred the old-established business to Mr. William Hunter McKenzie. The new proprietor will carry on the concern under the original name, and, with his varied and lengthy experience in all branches of the jewellery business, I have no doubt the Mr. McKenzie will worthily maintain the high reputation enjoyed by the establishment during many past years.

There is already a very similar image from a knife blade in this section of the Forum. The images show cutlery retailed by an ironmonger Gilbert Ross at Inverness.

The dates reference in that post suggest 1920's but the presence on Academy Street appears from 1900 though the address number listed has variation according to Post Office directories.

Information on line also suggests Gilbert Ross took over a second ironmongers in Inverness on Hamilton Street (possibly 22), known as "Mitchells". Gilbert Ross's businesses lasted into the 2nd half of the 20th Century.
