Reed & Barton Silver Set (newbie needs help)

Post by Twinmommy »

Hi all,

I have a 5 pc silver set that is stamped "MFG & Plated by Reed & Barton" the number "3030" on all 5 pieces. The larger pieces have the numbers "6" and "7" stamped under the "3030"

I have searched and searched to find the pattern and date of this set. If anyone could help I sure would appreciate it.

Thanks!

I contacted Reed & Barton to ask them...this is their reply

"Hello, you have the Cashmere Band tea set that made from 1880-1885. The set sold for $55.00 during that period and it also had a coffee urn that sold for $33.00 and it is silver plated."

Many years later and the Reed & Barton corporate files have apparently been buried away at Harvard University after being donated. So I have no idea what the researchers for the firm were looking at. But, the design work on the flatware was filed for patents under the number 15,517 with the granted dating of February 05 1887* turning up stamped on pieces. [Italian, under number 15,271 was applied for on June 06 1884 and granted on August 19 1884. This would be in line before Cashmere if the order holds. Vendome was 15,586 and should follow after Cashmere..applied and granted dates not yet clear even though 1884 is commonly thrown out there.] It would seem therefore that this set might have been in production later than the years given by the researchers at R&B.

*An odd date in that it also turned up on some Italian forks which carried that date as well as the 1884 stamped line. Not sure if that was an accident or if R&B was declaring a secondary patent on something there. So for now, this 1887 date must be viewed as subject to revision upon further evidence.

A lot of checking of some pretty bad photography brings forth the actual date for Cashmere as November 04 1884. Given the basic five year range, I’d expect the holloware production to date 1885 to 1890, with some available for a time afterwards.

Of course, that all depends upon whether or not the holloware band is actually related to the flatwares design. These guys may have been re-using names on unrelated lines. Jackson’s grandchild wrote in to one site and stated the family had a drawer full of his samples.
