Hello,
I am seeking help on identifying the hallmarks on this salt cellar.
I found a listing of what appear to be similar pieces online and they said they thought they might be Hanau.
Thank you for any expertise and assistance.
Best,
Victoria
Help with marks on silver salt cellars
Re: Help with marks on silver salt cellars
Hi Victoria,
Most likely not silver but silver- plated.
The three marks are typical silver-plate marks. The third, last mark represents a spread out animal skin, for a skin of silver. Thin layer of silver or silver- plated.
Peter.

Re: Help with marks on silver salt cellars
Hello Peter,
Thank you for your speedy reply.
I wonder if you might be able to direct me as to where to look for this mark (or should I move this over to the silverplate section?).
With you advice, I searched about the animal skin mark and cannot find any references.
Would you have an idea of where to look or what makers might have used this mark.
Thank you again,
Victoria

Dear Victoria,

To my knowledge pictorial silver- plate marks have not really been researched. It are often fantasy marks and in the beginning they almost imitated British silver hallmarks.

Silver or plated, to make sure why not have the salt cellars tested for silver? If you do so please keep the forum informed of the result.
Peter.
