A Disastrous Fire Affects Two St. Louis Houses

St. Louis, Mo., Dec. 31. — The Bauman-Massa Jewelers’ Supply Co. and the St Louis Clock & Silverware Co., who occupy the four-story building 409 N. 4th St., suffered a most disastrous loss by fire on Wednesday, at 3.30 A. M. The Bauman-Massa Co. occupy the lower floor of the building. Their loss was comparatively small, being principally caused by water and chemicals.

It is estimated that $2,500 will cover their loss. They were fully insured and the fire will in no way interfere with their business. The St. Louis Clock & Silverware Co. occupy the second, third and fourth floors of the building. The fire originated in their salesroom on the second floor, and was due to a defective flue. Their stock was damaged to the extent of $15,000, fully covered by insurance.

These same firms narrowly escaped loss by fire two weeks ago when the Udell Wooden ware Co’s, block, across the street from them was burned. The St. Louis Clock and Silverware Co. were carrying a very large stock at the time of the fire. Everything in their salesroom was destroyed, and the room itself presented the appearance of an old curiosity shop, with its costly plate, its expensive clocks and its fragments of art bronze.

Out of the chaos wrought by the fire the insurance adjusters are rescuing what they could for an underwriters’ sale. O. J. Pfeffer, manager of the St. Louis Clock & Silverware Co., stated that the fire did little if any damage to the stock stored on the fourth floor, and that the fire would not interfere with their business nor delay them in filling orders.

The Bauman-Massa Company have again enlarged their wholesale quarters on the second floor of the Commercial Building—the third time in as many years—and for some little time to come will be enabled to transact business with greater facility and convenience to their customers. They have secured over half again as much space as they have occupied heretofore, which has enabled them to entirely change the arrangement of their store and display their stock to much better advantage. With the instalment of their additional fixtures and new arrangement of their salesrooms and offices their quarters will be thoroughly modern and second to none in the trade for good light, roominess and conveniences.

Edwin Massa Killed

Veteran St. Louis Wholesale Jeweler Meets Death in Automobile Accident

JACKSONVILLE, FLA., March 2.—Edwin Massa, 80 years old and member of the Bauman-Massa Jewelry Co., wholesaler, St. Louis, Mo., was instantly killed at 4.30 o’clock yesterday afternoon on the highway a few miles south of Jacksonville, when the automobile in which he was riding overturned.

In the car with Mr. Massa were Mrs. Comford, wife of Mr. Massa’s nephew; Mrs. Massa and Mrs. J. G. Cantrell. Mrs. Comford was driving. Other than Mr. Massa the occupants of the car suffered slight bruises. Mr. Massa was pinned underneath the car and it was necessary to procure jacks to raise the machine before he could be extricated.

Mr. and Mrs. Massa arrived in Jacksonville several days ago and were guests of Mrs. Cantrell. Mrs. Comford, a resident of this city, had arranged a pleasure ride for them for the afternoon.

When near Green Cove Springs, another machine traveling in the same direction passed the Comford car and cut in too closely. In an effort to avoid a collision Mrs. Comford cut the wheels sharply, causing the car to skid and overturn.

St. Louis, Mo., March 4.—Members of the trade heard with regret of the sudden death of Edwin Massa, vice-president of the Bauman-Massa Jewelry Co., wholesaler, in the Republic building. He was killed in an automobile accident, near Jacksonville, Fla., March 1, while touring with his wife, a daughter-in-law and others. Mr. Massa retired from active work about five years ago but retained an interest in the firm and was highly esteemed in the trade by his associates and members of the industry.

Mr. Massa, who resided at 5409 Maple Ave., went to Florida two weeks ago with his wife to recuperate after an attack of pneumonia. He was a native of Ohio and at the age of 17 was a clerk in a Columbus jewelry store. Several years later he went to Alton, Ill., where he was employed by Cary, Hawley & Co. He returned to Columbus, then come to St. Louis in 1877, starting the E. Massa Co., wholesale jewelers. In 1889 Mr. Massa and Samuel Bauman organized the Bauman-Massa company.
