I'm normally pretty good at figuring these things out, but I'm stuck on this one!
It's an old gold, or possibly silver, gold plated cigarette case.
There are 2 initials on either side of that bird... That are rubbed down pretty bad, so you can't see in the picture...
I'm pretty sure it's J (bird) C, or J (bird) G.
Says made in France... Then underneath, a smeared 6 with 2 more smaller, indecipherable numbers/letters.
Then the shield, with a hammer crossed with what looks like a dragon.
Myself and 2 other people have spent hours searching for what any of these symbols mean. Other than the made in France, lol... I can't even figure out what the 2 4 0 stamp means.
I'm usually really good at finding this stuff... But need your help with this one! Thanks in advance for any info!

Hi,
I think the marks are not consistent with French gold or silver marks, but silver-plate marks (maker`s mark in a rectangle).
Take a look here:

Hi,
More precisely ``gold-plated``(plaque or). But base metal, not gold-plated silver.

Hello, you might need to think out of the box a little more. The bird appears to be a hawk or an owl. The other pictorial mark, the hammer and possibly the top of a bishops crook is shown on line on an item by Emile Puiforcat (Jean Puiforcat) and some other makers work. Could be a place of manufacture mark or an indication material used mark. Could the middle mark be 6 grams as an indication of the quality/weight of the plate used on the box.
