Trying to identify the maker of Georgian caster.

Post by techsol »

Hi, Does anybody have any definitive thoughts on the maker of this Georgian caster dated 1762. It has the makers mark ID with a pellet between, I can't find anything in Grimwade or Jackson's that seems to fit the bill?

Many thanks I think you are correct. A closer examination of the pellet with a stronger loupe, shows it to be star shaped rather than circular as I previously thought, this would indeed point to it being Delmester's mark.

According to the literature this is correct, but there is a growing line of thought that this is in fact Jabez Daniels. I forget the reasons why, but a customer of mine is quite an expert on the subject. Delmester stops, and then starts again with this unregistered mark 10 years or so later.

Daniels was in partnership with Mince, and their marks and combined mark are often found on peppers, cruet frames and other related items.

I have a tea pot or coffee pot with the same I(dot)D marking with a date letter placing this piece in 1774. I also believe that the maker is Jabez Daniell only because it is the only maker's mark from the period that matches, even though the only marks that have seen include the letters for his partner, James Mince. Does anyone know whether or not Daniell worked on his own?
