Re: ELLERBY, William (Grimwade p.503)
A William Ellerby of Spilsby, Lincolnshire was apprenticed in 1786 to John Lewin Newman of the Paviors Company. He was made free in 1802.
He married Ruth Manningford in 1799 at St Martin, Ludgate; they were both from that parish.
From 1799-1823 five children of William and Ruth Ellerby, including Elizabeth, William and John (see below), were christened at St Gregory by St Paul’s. The 1823 record for a child born in 1807 shows William as a hardware man.
James Startin of Southampton signed to be his apprentice in the Paviors Company in 1802.
He entered marks at Goldsmiths’ Hall from 1802-10 as a small worker at Ave Maria Lane.
The burial of Ruth Ellerby aged 41 years was registered at St Gregory’s in 1811. A child Ruth was also buried there in 1809.
In 1816 his son William was apprenticed to him.
He was assessed to Land Tax as tenant of property in Ave Maria Lane from 1799-1826. The assessment for 1827 was also made in his name but is a continuation error (see below). The assessments from 1828 were made on Elizabeth, William and John Ellerby.
His Will was proved for probate on 24th October 1826 (National Archives reference PROB 11/1717/351).

Re: ELLERBY, William (Grimwade p.503)
William Ellerby is also recorded as a marker of Soldered Plate otherwise Close Plate. Bradbury p445 gives him dates from 1803 although Bissets "Magnificent Directory of Birmingham" of c 1799/1800 records him at 8 Ave Maria Lane as an agent for John Barnet, button maker of Snow Hill Birmingham. Ellerbys soldered plate mark as illustrated by Bradbury is relatively rare but always applied to well made items including marrow scoops and fish slices. Burnisherboy

Recorded as a Wholesale Hardwareman of 8, Ave Maria Lane, Ludgate Street.
It would appear that part of the premises occupied by William Ellerby at 8, Ave Maria Lane, Ludgate Street, were occupied by Colley & Hargreaves, Table Knife Cutlers, and Roberts, Cadman & Co., Silver Platers.

Re: ELLERBY, William (Grimwade p.503)
Blagden, Hodgson & Co. would appear to have appointed William Ellerby and his successors of 8 Ave Maria Lane, Ludgate Street, City, as their London agents. A Sun Insurance policy dated 13.5.1829 covered their stock etc in the house of Ellerby, 8, Ave Maria Lane (Guildhall Library MS 11936/517 no. 1092099). W. Ellerby, variously described as a silver and plated warehouseman and hardwareman, a silversmith, jeweller, hardwareman, cutler and plated warehouseman, himself insured with the Sun, policy nos. (? 745201 or near), 830016, 841786, 860931, 989176 and 1023159 dated respectively c.Feb 1803, 17.4.1809, 2.4.1810, 9.9.1811, 11.2.1822 and 17.11.1824 (Guildhall Library MSS 11936/427, 444, 449, 455, 489 and 503). William Ellerby was succeeded at the same address by Elizabeth Ellerby, William Ellerby and John Ellerby (Guildhall Library MS 11936/513, policy no. 1978887 dated 30.7.1828). John Ellerby retired from this partnership on 29.8.1831 (LG 1831 p.1762). Elizabeth Ellerby and William Ellerby continued the business until 24th June 1847 when, described as wholesale jewellers, silversmiths and cutlers, they dissolved their partnership (LG 1847 p.2521). By 1852 the firm is listed at the at the same address as Ellerby & Co. wholesale Birmingham and Sheffield warehouse.

Re: ELLERBY, William (Grimwade p.503)
The 1798 Land Tax Redemption for Ave Maria Lane London gives Jon Key and Sons £3 3s 3d with the surname only Ellerby underneath. This must be William and depending on when the entry was made is perhaps the earliest indication of his connection with commercial premises. Jon Key and Sons are unknown to me , were they in a similar line of business as William Ellerby?
