Stealing by an Employe

Alexander Anderson was recently convicted of stealing several silver articles, of the value of £5, from his employers, Josiah Thomas and Co.,
St. Augustine's Parade, Bristol, and sentenced to three months' hard labor. Up to the conviction, prisoner had borne a good character, and was in receipt of £3 a week. He, however, took the goods to a cabman, who bought them of him, and who was also committed to the same punishment for receiving with guilty knowledge.

Notice is hereby given, that the Partnership heretofore subsisting between us the undersigned, Thomas Christopher William Saunders and Francis Jacob, at No. 26, High East-street, Dorchester, in the county of Dorset, as Jewellers, Gold and Silversmiths, Watch and Clock Makers, and Dealers in Plate and Plated Articles, under the style or firm of Saunders and Jacob, was, on the 30th day of June, 1879, dissolved by mutual consent. All debts owing from or due to the said firm will be discharged or received by the said Francis Jacob, who for the future will carry on the business on his own account.— Dated the 5th day of January, 1880.

The 1861 English Census describes Thomas Saunders as a 56 year-old, Crediton, Devon, born 'Master Silversmith' employing three men. He was recorded as a Widower. The same census records his son, Thomas C.W. Saunders, as a 29 year-old, Dorchester, Dorset, born Jeweller, unmarried and living at the same address, 26, High East Street, Dorchester, as his father.

The business of Saunders and Jacob was purchased by Thomas Braybrooke in 1894.

HENRY CHARLES STICKLER

BANKRUPTCY

Henry Charles Stickler, 16, Palmer Street, Frome, watchmaker and jeweller. At the meeting of the creditors of this debtor, held last month in the Bristol Bankruptcy Court before the Official Receiver the statement of affairs showed liabilities amounting to £894 15s. 11d. to unsecured creditors : £24 10s. to creditors fully secured, the estimated value of the securities being £57 2s. 6d. ; £37 due to partly-secured creditors, the value of the securities being £12 ; the total liabilities expected to rank being £919 15s. 11d. The assets amounted to £620 8s. 11d., of which £432 was for stock; the deficiency being £311 11s. "A false report that he was a bankrupt, and pressure by creditors in consequence," was the alleged cause of failure. The Official Receiver's observations were as follows : — " This debtor commenced business as a watchmaker and jeweller in 1879, with a capital of £20. The books kept are not complete, though they may have been such as would suffice for recording daily sales, &c. The debtor never took stock, and never prepared any statement of his affairs. At the date of the petition an execution had been levied, and the high bailiff was in possession. The debtor pledged several watches and articles of jewellery, and states that the goods so pledged have not been paid for; ' the surplus set out in the statement represents his estimate of the value after the repayment of the loans. The business has been kept going for the benefit of the estate, and in order that the ' winding ' connection should not be lost, but it will probably be found that the greater part of it has been transferred to other tradesmen. It is not the debtor's intention to make any proposal, either by composition or scheme of arrangement, and he has been adjudicated a bankrupt on his own petition." Mr. G. G. Poppleton, of Birmingham was appointed trustee, with a committee of inspection.

John A. Boote, manufacturing jeweler, 738 Penn St., Reading, Pa., last week received a cablegram from England announcing the death of his father, John Boote, in Wiltshire, England, at the age of 85 years.

BANKRUPTCY

He John Bernard Turner.— The first meeting of the creditors of John Bernard Turner, of the Old Post Office and Charlton Villa, Parkstone, in the county of the town of Poole, watchmaker and jeweller, was held last month at the office of the Official Receiver at Salisbury. The summary of debtor's statement of affairs showed gross liabilities amounting to £334 16s. 4d., of which £326 16s. 10d. are expected to rank. The assets were stated at £190 10s. 10d., leaving a deficiency of £136 6s. The debtor alleged that bad trade and being unable to let apartments were the causes of failure. He only had £50 when he started on business. The Official Receiver is the trustee, and he will wind up the estate.
