Hi Mrconrad 77,
Welcome to the forum.
Your candlesticks are older and made before the Duty mark had been introduced. The R, I believe could be for the year 1732.
Also the Leopard head Crowned indicates made before 1822.

The date letter is (looking at my hallmark book) definitely for 1732
Nice candlesticks by the way.

Thank you for the replies, and help. I see that with the date mark now, I didn't even think to look at the marks that old. Now I just need to figure out the makers mark. They really are beautiful pieces, and im floored that they are almost almost 300 years old. We believe they were a wedding gift to my wifes grandmother and grandfather as a wedding gift maybe, which would have been sometime in the late 30's or early 40's I think.
I took a (hopefully) better picture of what I think is the makers mark. I saw another post about James Gould I believe it was, and he would fit I think the time frame in which they were made, but the post and pictures I have seen of his mark had a crown or something over it, and it doesn't look like this one does. Could he still be the maker of these?
Also just looking up other Candlesticks, I noticed most that I have seen don't have the top piece, could this piece have been added later?
Sorry for all the questions, it just seems the more we find out, and research the more questions we find.
Thank you again, this site is a wealth of information, learning a lot and having fun looking at other pieces that we have found around the house, even found a gravy boat we have that appears to have pseudo markings on it. Still trying to figure those out.

Hello!
Yes ,this is james Gould's earlier punch, registered in 1722. He was a specialist candlestick maker and many candlesticks of this period came from his workshop.
I'd advise you to take them to a local auction house for a valuation for insurance purposes.

Hi JBA,
Regarding maker's mark of James Gould.
My only reference at the moment; monogram IG is surmounted by a crown dated 1733
Is it possible to show us a copy of an early maker’s mark of James Gould? Thanks.
Regards,
Oel

Thank you JBA, Thats what I was thinking, Just couldn't find any marks without the crown, The rest of it looks the same.
Oel, Yeah thats the only mark I have been able to see, I looked up a few candlesticks by James Gould, none that I found from 1732 showed the makers marks. I think I'm pretty convinced that is what I have, although if I can find someone in this area that can take a look and verify than Ill know for sure.
Thanks again for all of the help. I always find this type of research fascinating especially on things this old.
