Hi,
I recently acquired hallmarked tumbler the hallmark is H&H. with a phoenix emblem and the 6420. Can anyone please identify this hallmark from that description.

One other question I have from the information received from Trev is, the firm of hukin & heath were in business from 1880 to 1953. Does the nummber 6420 also impressed on the base, actually indicate a year of manufacture or is that a pattern number. I would like to identify if possible, the age of my "tumbler". I cannot also seem to get the picture small enough to show anyone.

Just a little touch on this company's working period thanks primarily to google. The 'Handbook' to the manufacturers & exporters of Great Britain, ed. by G.T. Wright [afterw.] Wright's improved handbook of the principal manufacturers, exporters, agents, merchants and warehousemen of Great Britain 1870 lists Hulkin & Heath electorplate works at 71 Newhall St, Birmingham.

The possibilities for the meaning of the numbers on your item are many, and no doubt a method of dating could be among them. However, as a rule, I don't think that information was generally given to the end user.

The '6420' number refers to a pattern or batch number, it would be for internal use and does not really help in the dating of the piece unless perhaps a catalogue or similar from Hukin & Heath comes to light.

That said, I've just noticed in an advertisement from Hukin & Heath that they claimed establishment in 1855. I think our date may have come from a misprint in John Culme's Directory of Gold & Silversmiths which appears to have two conflicting dates. So the correct date of establishment should read 1855.

I think the year 1855 is claimed because Hukin was in the business by then. As far as I can tell, Hukin doesn't appear in directories with Heath until 1870. William R Heath who I believe was Jonathan W Hukin's original Heath partner would have been about 16 years old in 1855.
