Hi Steve,

Your box is London 1854 as I think you probably already know and I am confident that it is the work of John Howes and not John Hicks. John Howes appeared to specialise in fitting out dressing and toiletry boxes which comprise of glass bottomed bottles, jars and boxes with sterling lids.

Here is a little about him:

Occupation  6 Jun 1841  Working silversmith
Residence  6 Jun 1841  Hawley Place, Kentish Town, St Pancras, London

London JH mark registered July 1844

Occupation  23 Aug 1849  Silversmith
Residence  23 Aug 1849  Marylebone, London

Occupation 30 Mar 1851 Working Silversmith
Residence  30 Mar 1851  22 Myddleton Street, St James, Clerkenwell, London

Occupation  30 Nov 1851  Silversmith
Residence  30 Nov 1851  22 Myddleton Street, St James, Clerkenwell, London

Occupation  21 Oct 1855  Silversmith
Residence  21 Oct 1855  Upper Gloucester Street, Clerkenwell, London

Occupation  3 Jan 1858  Silversmith
Residence  3 Jan 1858  Upper Gloucester Street, Clerkenwell, London

Occupation  7 Apr 1861  Working Silversmith empl 3 boys
Residence  7 Apr 1861  1 Upper Gloucester Street, Clerkenwell, London

You can find other examples of similar pieces to yours by John Howes if you search online.

Cheers,
Steve
