Hi,
I have 6 matching salt spoons with the hallmarks on the back. There is a monogram on the top and I can't read what it is but it also has a crown engraved on top. Any ideas about the crown? Admin edit
Thanks in advance,
evanlynn13

If a better image of the monogram is needed I will attempt to take a better picture.

Hi,
Welcome to the Forum.
Great set of spoons.
Can you try to capture a larger close-up of the engraving?

Thanks Trev. I have asked several friends and coworkers and no one can read the monogram. I am going to read up on how to make it clearer and will get back with you.

I'll move the topic to the Family Crests section to see if we have any luck there.
Count's coronet? PEM?

I think the intertwined cursive initials read JSM. I cannot identify the coronet above them. It presumably identifies JSM's rank in the nobility but perhaps not the British nobility. The inscription is engraved the other way round from what is normal on British spoons which might perhaps suggest these spooons belonged to somebody in continental Europe.

The middle letter looks like an "E" to me.

Hi,
Not Commonwealth usage. The coronet has 9 pearls, Continental usage in German-speaking countries for COUNT (der Graf).
Whatever the monogram, it`s impossible to identify the owner.
Cheers

Thanks so much. This forum has been so helpful and I am so impressed with everyone's knowledge and helpfulness. It is kind of fun to imagine who had the spoons and what kind of life they lived.
I have other items my great aunt left me but I don't want to be a board hog! These spoons are the prettiest and most interesting to me.

The Art of Heraldry (1904) and The British Herald (1830) both remind us that a viscount has a coronet of nine pearls.

Hi,
Viscount coronet has 9 pearls, but different from Continental usage of count coronet, pearls being on spikes.
An Illustrated Dictionary of Art and Archeology by J W Mollett (Sampson Low, 1883).
