Hi all
I found this punch strainer, about 11 cm wide, which I think is from London.




I say "I think" because the hallmarks is really barely visible, I think they have been deleted specifically to leave room for the engraving of a shell and initials.
It seems to me to see, from left to right

a PS mark (Paul Storr ??)
The Erased Leopard's head
The Lion passant
then, beyond the shell
An indistinct mark (green arrow),perhaps the sovereign's head ??
The upper part of a letter S.(red arrow)
I would like to know if you also seem to see these things or it is my fantasy that gallops.
And why cancel the hallmarks, since you could make the engraving somewhere else.
Your opinions will be greatly appreciated

Most Likely the other mark is the date letter but it would help if you would send an up close pic of the other marks. The makers mark looks like Philip Shaw known to be in business from 1730-1733, possibly longer. The next mark is the crowned leopard for London followed by lion passant for sterling. The piece definitely predates the monarchs head duty marks.

To me the remains of the lion passant mark looks like a pre 1679 example, with the mark next to the green arrow that of a worn date mark.

I would say that it is an Exeter mark and the work of Pentecost Symonds, assayed in 1751.
