It's Japanese. The mark on the underside is the Japanese equivalent of the European family crest.

I have a book (somewhere!) that lists over 4,000 Japanese crests, I'll try and dig it out and see if there is a match.

I finally tracked down the book that I mentioned, but unfortunately I could not find a match in it.

No, sorry, this is definitely chinese, the symbol on the bottom - chinese happiness and longevity symbol.
