Inherited this cane from my GGgrandfather. It is supposedly a SHILLELAGH and has a silver band around the handle and silver cap/tip. Best I can decipher the mark is Howard James, but beyond that have nothing. Here is the photo of the markings.

Welcome to the Forum.

This mark is almost certainly that of Henry Johnston. The hallmarks indicate that they were applied at Dublin in 1911. He entered a similar mark with London Assay Office in 1901.

Henry Johnston's business was extensive, with outlets in Belfast, Dublin, Cork, Londonderry and Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He manufactured walking sticks and umbrellas using Irish Blackthorn.

Fantastic. Thank you very much. It was indeed a blackthorn walking stick. I'm passing on the information to a number of great great grandchildren. William James Barry came to America from Cork, and became a Harbor Captain in New York City. Died in 1921 at age 86.
