| Italian born, Alfredo Sciarrotta (1907-1985) was smuggled out of Italy in 1944 by U.S. Army Intelligence to work on submarine armaments for the Allied war effort. After WWII he settled in Rhode Island and opened Sciarrotta Silversmiths in Newport. His design skills and craftsmanship were quickly noted by such firms as Cartier, Gorham, Shreve Crump & Low, Gump's and Bailey, Banks & Biddle, and they soon began commissioning special orders from him. By the time of his retirement in 1975, several of Sciarrotta's works were in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.
