Re: Hallmarks matching

Hi, My suggestion is that the lid is a replacement. Since it attached to the body it's quite possible that an unfortunate event overtook the original lid and James Deakin & Sons were commissioned by the owner to make a 'new' lid. The replacement would have been made after 1890 since it would hav...

Re: silver mirror

Hi there, From the right the marks are script A 1901/02, the next mark three wheat sheaves is for the City of Chester Assay Office, the lion passant signifies sterling (92.5%) silver. The last mark is the maker, strictly speaking the sponsor but often one in the same, I cannot decipher maybe someone...

Hi,
My eyes are dim I can't make out all the detail but if your description is correct the 'n' for Sheffield is 1905/06 and the maker could be Frank Cobb. 1912/13 is a 'u' which can easily be mistaken for an 'n' but from what I can make out it is an 'n'.
Hope this helps.

Hi, your piece is hallmarked for 1905/6 the maker's mark looks like William Hutton & Sons. It is probably a vinegar and oil set for salad dressing.
Hope this helps,

Bit of info on A D Norman Ari D Norman is probably one of the most high profile modern silversmiths having been given the Freedom of the City of London in 1989 in recognition of his work. I believe, although I'm not sure, that Ari Norman lobbied, obviously unsuccessfully, to have the date letter ret...

Gorham bowl pattern

Hi, I have a bowl it has the marks for the Gorham Manufacturing Company in Birmingham UK the date letter is rubbed but I understand Gorham had a factory in Birmingham from 190? to 193?. I have tried to identify the pattern I was hoping it was a popular pattern such as Chrysanthamum but I don't think...

Hi there, You're correct Birmingham 1890/91 both letter, typeface and punch shape confirm. Maker/sponsor was Deakin & Francis. I've come across sideways marks particularly on smaller pieces. You probably know that duty on silver was removed on the 30th April 1890 and 'hallmark year' changed in J...

I have no doubt that the item is a wine siphon. My problem with it is that I decant wine for 3 reasons aeration, removal of sediment and presentation. Clearly the siphon achieves presentation, the removal of sediment is highly questionable and, since a siphon is fundamentally an air free system, it ...

Hi there,
It could be a string dispenser. It's a bit small overall as is the aperture at the top. I've come across some wacky designs for string dispensers so who knows!
Hope this helps you or prods someone else.

Hi Ray, The silver collar looks like a Birmingham 1938 assay. Can't help with the maker/sponsor. The vase looks like Royal Worcester ivory blush but I'm no expert on ceramics. Many of the major ceramics manufacturers had identification schemes/codes which can date the vase. The bottom of the vase wi...

Two makers/sponsors marks??

Hi MCB,
Thanks for that. Do you happen to know what relation, if any, Robert Victor Dumenil was to Charles Henry Dumenil whose work I have come across several times?

Two makers/sponsors marks??

Hi Paulh, Thanks for the info but I'm not sure about Liberty the only mark I've seen for them is the very distinctive cojoined lozenge mark. I'm not sure they would register a different mark I certainly haven't seen one. I'm pretty sure it's a maker/sponsor mark and a retailer mark (which may well n...

Help with maker FB&Co

Hi all, I have this small porringer/bowl Birmingham 1904 but I'm stumped with the maker. I thought at first it was a variant of Fenton Brothers but I'm now pretty sure it's not them. Any help in identifying the maker would be greatly appreciated. Thanks silvertt http://c.imagehost.org/t/0411/por001....

Two makers/sponsors marks??

Hi all, I've come across this cigar holder, it has a black bakelite(?) mouthpiece. What's interesting to me, I really should get out more, is the two makers/sponsors marks. I know that in Scotland the assay master (Deacon) used to put his marks which were usually initials but I haven't come across e...
