Of course, this is the solution: a replacement. The marks are Roman and can be dated to the time of the papacy of Benedict XIV, Cardinal Lambertini (1740-1758).

The Cathedral Treasure
Hello everyone
I was asked to identify the hallmarks of some objects in the cathedral treasure of my city.
Among the objects is this tankard, which seems German or at least central European.

I can't decipher the hallmarks.

This silver-plated bucket by Kerr & Phillips magically becomes an antique holy water bucket made in Naples in the 19th century in solid silver.

Re: Old Italian Ladle - Hallmarks DG DG
Yes, this ladle is really intriguing.
I have never seen such a peculiar attachment of the bowl to the handle before.
I don't understand what could make one think of duty dodging.
It goes without saying that identifying a silversmith by his initials alone is almost impossible.
Nice item.

As little as I know of English silver, I rule out that it is Sheffield silver. And I would be inclined to rule out that it is solid silver.

Thank you both for your comment.
I prefer to ask experts I trust, rather than take for granted the opinion of the auction house where I find genuine and fake mixed together.
And for the Italian silvers I'm sure of it

I would think of an item to offer cigars to guests, given the two handles.

Hello Silverfan
The mark "GBC with figure in the middle", as can be read in the book by Donaver and Dabbene, has been found only once on a teaspoon and the silversmith has not been identified.
