I would just like to add that I don't believe it to be a 'B'. Wherever it is stamped on both bracelets it is constructed the way you would write an 'R' and there is no curving towards or line at what would be the top of a 'B'.

I have looked up tughra on Wikipedia which gives a lot of detail about this symbol. There are definite similarities in the overall shape. Also I did think that the bracelets are Egyptian Bedouin. However any I have seen on the internet are much cruder and the engraving a lot coarser. Any ideas about...

I have seen the mark of Alexander Lucas in Jackson's. The letters are of a different font and the dot in the middle is half way up the letters. Can you tell me please if you have seen it elsewhere as it appears on these tongs?

Pair of silver cuff bracelets from where, when, by whom?

This is one of two identical cuff bracelets. I am interested to find out who the maker was, and when and where they were made. The main markings are on the inner surface, but the reverse R is also on the outside on the ridge and can be seen in the second photo. What does each of these marks mean? Th...

In Jackson's the mark shown for George Gray is quite large compared with others and especially the AB on marks by the Batemans. The AB could easily be that of Ann Bateman as far as the look of it is concerned. My creamer doesn't show the crossed part of George Gray's second G but the other creamer e...

Don't let us forget that the AB is not quite right for Abraham Barrier. It is not right for Peter and Ann Bateman either because there is no PB present. Isn't the CG or GG under the date letter and London mark? Although both my creamer and the one I found on the internet are probably marked in the s...

I saw mention of this practice on a silver tongs web site. I am not sure what this all means ultimately. If George Gray did the overstamping then it wasn't very effective. Also the whole Peter and Ann Bateman stamp wouldn't have fitted. It appears to me that the GG was stamped even before the London...

I have found a creamer very similar to this, they say that it carries hallmarks for Abraham Barrier. Does Grimwade's show a mark for him? There is a 1775 mark for him in Jackson's but it has a dot between the A and B.

The base of the creamer is 46mm wide and the width of the mark is 4mm, you may prefer to measure this off the photo now that you have the width. I don't as yet have a copy of Arthur Grimwade's book. It has been suggested that this could be by Ann Bateman alone. The size of the stamp would fit that o...

Who is the maker of this helmet creamer?

I believe this was the first item of silver we ever bought, in 1979. We didn't know a thing then about sterling silver. We were told the name of a maker but the longer we own it and the more I learn the less certain I am of the maker. I invite you to express an opinion. Linda http://www2.filehost.to...

The mark in my book 'The Silversmiths of Birmingham and their Marks:1750-1980' that appears to match yours is that of Jos. Carnell, registered February 1828.

Is it possible to show the maker's mark more clearly? I have some JC marks in a book but can't be sure which one it is without a clearer photo.

Who is the maker and who is AL on these Glasgow tongs?

These sugar tongs were made in Glasgow in 1845. I have not been able to identify the initials AL. I am not sure that AL was the original maker though as these initials appear to have been stamped over a previous mark. It seems that the original stamp was roughlly filled or patched before the AL mark...

Jackson's lists both a John Scardon and a John Sweet, Exeter 1823, in the list of Exeter and West Country goldsmiths. I wonder if either of these could be your Exeter JS. I have also done a search on Google and found at http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/Exeter/ExeterPigotPre1830.html" onclick=&quo...

Thank you Gerryl. I do have a 1978 edition of Bradbury's Book of Hallmarks. Perhaps I should go out and buy the latest edition. I also have Judith Banister's book, the full and pocket Jackson's, and 'The Silversmiths of Birmingham'. None of these show this information. I wonder if the snuff box was ...

Snuff box with differing date letter stamps.

This snuff box was made in Birmingham in 1876 by George Unite and Sons. Although the date letter on the lid and base are the same, the shape of the stamp around them differs. The stamp on the lid is incorrectly the same as the shape around the anchor and lion. The stamp on the base is the correct ov...
