Re: MORDECAI, Benjamin (Grimwade p.600)
To avoid confusion there was not a separate Register for the marks of bucklemakers. Prior to 1773 they were normally recorded in the Smallworkers Register, and after that in the new all-embracing Register, which included a column specifying the main category of the silversmith such as plateworkers, ...

Re: HOCKLY (HOCKLEY), Daniel (Grimwade p.548)
It would appear that the partnership of Daniel Hockley and Thomas Bosworth was not a long one. I have a buckle with what appears to be Hockley's January 1810 sole mark with a date letter for 1816/17, the mark presumably being re-used after Boswell's departure. Daniel Hockley then appears have entere...

Re: MINCE, James (Grimwade p.597-8 and 759)
James Mince was recorded in the London Gazette as bankrupt in 1791/92 at Bell Square, Foster Lane ( Issues 13356, 13372 and 13442). The London Gazette has no further notices beyond the initial bankruptcy. No notices of creditors meetings, dividends , or release etc. So it sounds as if they got nothi...

Re: MILLS, Richard (Grimwade p.597)
The history of Richard Mills is shrouded with uncertainly. Personally it would not surprise me to learn that Grimwade has actually conflated two silversmiths with the same names, one a large or plateworker, and the other a smallworker, the latter having died in 1772, the former having several marks ...

Another, probably more likely possibility, is Gabriel Sleath, who is known to have had nips assayed in the 1739 - 1755 period .

Are there any other marks ? If there's a Lion Passant and perhaps a town and date letter mark, photos of those would be very helpful

He was the son of John and Sarah Blake, and entered a mark with his mother after fathers death , as Sarah Blake and John William Blake (Grimwade No 2483)

Re: BLAKE, Sarah (Grimwade p.442)
This very neatly confirms that John William Blake (Grimwade p. 442, 738) was, as Grimwade suggestes, the son of Sarah and her husband John Blake (Grimwade 442, 737). The mark of Sarah and John William entered in 1809 (Grimwade No 2483) was that of the widow of John Blake and his son John William Bla...

After the silver buckle trades decline after 1790 William Yardley diversified not only into sword furniture but other related items .
I recently purchased a fish slice with his mark, dated London 1802/03
The handle was made by the specialist haft maker Moses Brent.

Re: BRENT, Moses William (Grimwade p.448)
It would appear from Leslie Southwick "London Silver-hilted Swords" that Moses William Brent came upon hard times as his wife petitioned the Goldsmiths' Company in 1823 , presumably for charitable relief . (Court Minutes 8 August 1823). Leslie Southwick has unfortunately conflated Moses Br...
