Re: Austrian JCK Brush with Habsburg armories of Ferdinand I

Should point out that Klinkosch silver to the court was marked with the eagle. I don't see it here. Is there another mark somewhere?

Re: Viennese silver 1840s Maker "FS"

This is part of what one would call Reisebesteck - i.e. travelling cutlery. It would fit into a case and might include several other pieces. Almost every one I have knowledge of contains a marrow spoon - interesting because since mad cow disease not many people are daring enough to eat any marrow. B...

Re: Gorham Co. - Mythologique Pattern

Nice! Reminds me of Old Munich by Black Starr & Frost, which I will photograph as soon as I find the config. pages for my camera! Every image it's taking is about 40 by 40 inches. I have neither patience nor space to fiddle with it.

This may have been an available pattern or it may have been a private order. This site specializes in Tiffany so if you do not find your pattern there you might ask them (admin edit - see Posting Requirements )

Re: Silver sickness

Hi Trev - Glad it is useful. It's funny - I told Lyndsie about my other silver cleaning method and nobody has an idea why it works. This is the one with cigar ashes - I suppose it won't be around much longer as smoking is being actively discouraged everywhere. (Don't actually know whether any ash wi...

Re: Silver sickness

Could not find the letter but essentially all the information from the Canadian Conservation Institute is here: http://canada.pch.gc.ca/eng/1439925170396 In my discussions with Lyndsie Selwyn silver sickness came up - it is thought that these spots begin as concentration of the alloy in the silver -...

Re: Books added to the website

The Hathi Trust, which is digitizing these books as if they're all about to burn, is ferocious about copyright. Hathi states that "volumes published outside the US from 1876 through 1923 are treated as public domain for users accessing the volumes from US IP addresses , however they are treated...

Re: HELP; Russian Monogram on Faberge

I am struck by the awkwardness of the spout and its insertion into the body. Looks too big. The authentic Faberge at Sotheby's is immediately several magnitudes more felicitous.

Re: Twin crests on Cork silver ladle

As stated, Ranelagh's crest is the conventional representation with the point of the arrow downward. This crest has the arrow in fessewise, which is highly unusual, perhaps outright odd - I don't have access to any of my books at the moment but I can't recall seeing one positioned like that. Anyone?

Trev I expect it is supposed to be a lion tho to me it looks more like an Afghan hound with those flowing ears. So, a hound?/lion? dexter rampant - the engraving is not very clear. . .

I'm thinking more along the lines of a seahorse, salient. Rising out of ducal coronet as in the Thomas family (or at least, one of them) of Wales.

Pewter. The iconography is from Numbers 13:23 The Spies (Kundschafter) Explore Canaan (Kana) …22When they had gone up into the Negev, they came to Hebron where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, the descendants of Anak were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) 23Then they came to the v...

Re: Kent Brothers of Toronto (Ambrose Kent & Sons Ltd.)

The Kent business is long and mysterious - At some point one or another of the brothers has become "Kent's Limited" Jewelers(NB spelling) Toronto inside a laurel wreath. Dupuis (auction house) sold an antique citrine and pearl necklace ten years ago, exceeding expectations by quite a bit: ...

further to Cheryl's post, one might add that - in North America, at least - there is no requirement to prove that you are the holder of which ever title (hahaha! pardon me, admins, I'm just thinking of a discussion over such, ongoing in our house over the last three decades) and/or coat of arms, and...
