Hi,

It's a V (from "Vreemd" .. Dutch for "foreign"). That (tax) stamp was used between 1906 and 1953 on items of foreign origin.
I think the rest of the marks are pseudo-marks.

Hope that helped,

Alain

Hi,

I'm leaning towards Dutch hallmarks.
Are there anymore marks on the item, maybe embedded in the design?

Hi,

The maker is J.D. Arnoldi (working from 1863 to 1873 in Amsterdam.
Benten & Zonen is the shopkeepers mark.
The date 1868 is correct. This is not a typical Art Deco piece.

Hope that helped,

Alain

Hi,

The roman II indicates that it was assayed after Sept. 1953.
The dateletter is probably the i of 1968 or the l of 1971.

Hi,

I think the 12 stands for 0.12 ct (the total stone weight) and CZ for Cubic Zirconia. Those are probably the blue stones that form the eyes.

Hi,

I would leave it as is, but if you do decide on repairs, have it done by someone who knows what he is doing. Send me a personal message for the name of the right person.

Hi,

In addition, the ax mark was stamped on items that were offered in the market again after 1853, but were stamped with - legit - hallmarks prior to 1814.

Hi, Harm Ellens, now that was a great designer (and former director of my school). After some thinking, I think the M2 mark might be struck on loose parts of an item that were assayed first and then assembled. The first letter indicates the city (M for Schoonhoven) and the number (2) to indicate the...

Hi,

HH is the mark of the maker (Hendrik Hooykaas). The 835 is the rounded new standard of what used to be 833 parts of silver (1000 parts is pure silver). Historically it comes from when we used strange measurements like grains etc. instead of the decimal standard.

Hi,

It is probably made by Hooykaas in Schoonhoven. The sword with the 835 means that it was made after 1953.

Hope that helped.

Hi,

Sounds like it is a spoon with multiple birth engravings from Friesland ("Douwes" is a typical Frisian family name).
"geboaren" means "born".
