Help with date letter and mystery mark on Britannia silver creamer

Post by tklwoooh »

So I'm pretty excited about this little creamer I just picked up at the local consignment store for ( admin edit)

It stands about 4" tall to the top of the spout, weighs 170 grams and has a gold washed interior. It has hunting scenes, of a dog, a doe, and frankly what looks like a rat. I'm hoping it's a rat. Stamped on the bottom is the letter "D", which I assume is production letter to identify the set it belonged to? Etched in the side is a mysterious strange little drawing of a person, perhaps wearing a crown? I have no idea about that-maybe the signature of the craftsman who did the chasing? Was such a thing done? Marked under the spout is a maker's mark in a rectangle that is "E" followed by a dot in the middle, and a second letter I am unsure of, possible an "N" or "M" of "F", or possibly something entirely different. Following that is the Britannia standard, the London lion head mark and a date letter I have no idea of. I took the best pictures I could; no matter how I look at it, the mark is blurry and hard to make out. It appears to have been double struck, and every angle I look at it, a different letter looks possible.

Any help from the experts would be greatly appreciated. Meanwhile, I'll take and post a better picture of the rat!

Than you all in advance!

I am SURE it is a rat! What else could it be?

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

Try to capture your images using the macro feature on your camera. Take the images in natural daylight, no flash.

Thanks, I will try and take some more. I'm not much of a camera guy, so I'm taking the macro photos with a loupe and a cell phone. No flash used. Honestly I'm not sure its possible to take a much better pic of the date letter. I've spent a long time looking at it with the loupe, and it seems like part of the chased decoration was either made over the mark or the mark was stamped on the decoration. I'm not certain of when in the manufacturing process the hallmarking would have occurred. In some of my pics you can see plainly see the shape of the outline of the date letter mark, but the letter itself is unclear- that's how it looks in real life; that's not a camera issue.

But I will see if I can borrow a camera and take a better pic.

Meanwhile, anyone have any insight into the etched figure?
