HS - Handmade Pair

Post by dognose »

Hi,

Some images sent to me of a Swedish hand-made fork and spoon, one from 1955 and the other from 1963, assayed at Stockholm, that have a great set of marks:

Any more information would be gratefully received.

There is not much more to tell. The maker is Hugo Strömsdahl AB 1955-1966 in Stockholm. On ordinary set of marks on relatively new objects. Usually the Swedish fineness is 830 but here it is marked STERLING i.e 925 :-)))) The mark right of E9 i most likely a logo or a trade mark. The exact meaning of "handsmide" is hand smithery. Hand made would be handgjort. That is anyway peanuts.

From left: Maker's mark, HS, assaying marks "cat's paw" guaranteeing a minimum fineness of .830, silver mark "S", town mark for Stockholm St. Erik' crowned head, year mark E9/N9 and rest is told above.

Hi Qrt.S,

Many thanks for this information. I was particularly intrigued by the mark to the right of the 'E9', which looks to me like a shipping buoy at sea, and as you suggest, a trade mark or logo would make sense.

Is this the same firm of Hugo Strömsdahl, then Hans Strömdahl AB, now Strömsdahls Juveler, a jewellery manufacturer at Stockholm that was established in 1904 and continuing today?

Thanks again for your thoughts.

First of all a typo correction. The surname is indeed STRÖMDAL (mea culpa). I suppose it is Hugo Strömdal's store. He was born 10.1.1880 in Vadsbro but worked in Stockholm 1905-1947. He died 22.6.1953 Stockholm. The business is still running by his descendants as you already noticed.
