Could someone identify this spoon for me please ?

Apologies if this isn't Scandinavian I thought it might be from Norway. I guess the 76 is for 1976 and the MH is the maker of the spoon but I am not sure. If anyone could identify this for me that would be great.

HI,

I just found Marius Hammer from Norway on your website. Although the spoon doesn't have the Hammer logo it looks like the same MH. Now I'm thinking it's not from 1976 maybe its from the 19th century. Oh the confusion :-)

the 13½ is silver content.
Carnt see the other marks try better pictures.

The spoon is properly norway but could be danish.

Thank you for your reply I appreciate you sharing the knowledge. I cant find any other 19th century Norwegian silversmiths other than Marius Hammer with the same style initials. It would be great if you could check your book, or maybe provide the details of the book so I could try to find it. Also do you know what silver content 13 1/3 represents?

Most likely it is Marius Hammer i Bergen, Norway. He was active 1871-1930. However, since the fineness in expressed in lot, it tells us that your spoon is made before 1892 in other words in 1876 (the mark 76). Moreover, Hose's answer is correct but I believe that it didn't answer your question because you probably meant fineness not content. The fineness 13 1/3 lot is rather uncommon but its counter value in ‰ is ~833/1000. The measure lot is a bit indeterminate and varies to some extent depending on the country where it was used.

Some more about Marius Laurits Hammer. He was born in 1847 and deceased in 1927- He was the son of Lauritz Hammer b. 1812 and d. 1874, active in Bergen 1842-1871

Thank you Hose. Interesting to know that the content was divided into 16 parts, and thank you Qrt.S for qualifying Hose's knowledge and counter value. Equally grateful for the history info regarding Marius and his father. I also read that they are well respected Norwegian silversmiths that made a variety of wares including jewellery, cutlery and hollowware.
