Scottish or Irish ??

Post by joho »

Hi All, can anyone throw some light on this silver-mounted wooden (bog oak?) circular plate or shallow bowl? It has an applied silver rim, an applied silver crest of a cat sejant (cat - o - mountain) and applied gothic script initials. The rim is engraved: Barguillean 14 Jan 1926. There are also two stamped marks to the rim. The one is similar to the Dublin date letter for 1881 and the other could possibly be a poorly struck Hibernia. The only reference I can find for Barguillean is that it is a farm/estate in Argyl and Bute, Scotland. No reference to this name in Ireland. I believe the cat sejant crest has both Irish and Scottish connections. It is 6 inches in diameter. Would be grateful for any help!! Many thanks, John
Admin - should this also be put in the Crest section?

The crest is similar to that of the Marquis of Clanricarde, Portumna, Co. Galway.

The initials appear to be H C B. This may suggest the family of Burke, Marquisses of Clanrickarde.
