Possibly Gorham match or lighter case? Or who?

Post by dfsckl »

I have this match (or less likely, lighter) case. Is relatively small, 1.25" wide by 2.325" tall, with a sprung lid. Is marked "Sterling" with three stamped makers marks that I __think__ might be Gorham, mid 19th century. However, reverse side is marked "1090" in very clearly stamped numbers, possibly indicating pattern, but the clarity of those implies 20th century to my eye. Also, there is something like a "half moon" on that side as well.

Anyone care to help me confirm or deny my hypothesis?

Any help is welcome. As this is my first post, also welcome help to improve future queries.

Thanks

Hi,
Yes, it is typical Gorham vesta case or match safe - late 19th or early 20th century when vesta matches were used.
