Hallmark On Antique Silver Mote Spoon

Post by mygoldrocks »

Hi,
Can anyone identify this silver hallmark please?
I bought it as a solid silver Dutch mote skimmer spoon but I can see gold colour in places which is either remnants of gilding or it is silver plated but I don't recognise the hallmark at all.

Hi Richard,

I believe a mark, perhaps a maker's mark has been overstruck with a Dutch duty mark, the crowned V. For more information about the crowned V see;

I also do not believe your spoon started its life as a mote spoon. Looking at the bowl shape perhaps it originally was a spoon, an at a later stage remodeled in a tea-strainer/ sifter spoon.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for the information, it is extremely useful.It does look like it has been overstruck now that I look more closely, the info on the crowned V is really interesting.
Many thanks
