These hallmarks are on a salver, I believe from Edinburgh 1747, assayed by Hugh Gordon, but I'm not sure of the maker's mark "EO". Is this the mark of Ebenezer Oliphant?
It's certainly Edinburgh, 1747 and Oliphant's working dates quoted by the Edinburgh Incorporation of Goldsmiths (1737 to 1766) fit nicely. The only caveat is that they show Oliphant's mark with a script E rather than a normal E.
I just re-read what I wrote and realise I got it back to front: "they show Oliphant's mark with a script E rather than a normal E" should have read "they show Oliphant's mark with a normal E rather than a script E".
Apologies to anyone who was confused about what is shown in the picture and what I wrote.
