George W. Steffins, living at 211 Highwood Ave., Weehawken, N.J., and for 20 years employed by Tiffany & Co. in this city, committed suicide, Monday, by inhaling illuminating gas. He was employed at Tiffany & Co.’s up to last Christmas time, when he was discharged. It is believed that he had been worrying until it made him despondent. Mrs. Steffins and the three children returned from calling on friends to find Steffins senseless in the bathroom. He was dead when a doctor arrived.

Dr. Geo. F. Kunz, the well known gem expert, and vice-president of Tiffany & Co., will deliver an address on the utility and beauty of metric weights and measures at the annual meeting of the Metric Association, of which he is president, which will be held in Cincinnati on Friday, Dec. 28. The morning and afternoon sessions will be held in Lecture Hall 104, Engineering building of the University of Cincinnati, and the Metric dinner will be held at 7 p. m. at the Hotel Sinton.

Dr. Geo. F. Kunz, head of the precious stone department of Tiffany & Co., has just issued an edition de luxe of his book called “Natal Stones.” The book is bound in half Levant morocco, with hand-made marbled sides and end papers.

Dr. George F. Kunz, gem expert and vice-president of Tiffany & Co., New York, delivered a lecture before the Pittsburgh branch of the American Institute of Mining Engineers at the University Club, Pittsburgh, Pa., last Friday evening. Dr. Kunz, who spoke on the “History of Precious Stones,” was formerly vice-president of the Institute.

An unusual distinction for a Wakefield, Mass., citizen has just been accorded Edward E. Oakes of 294 Albion St., corner of Green St., Stoneham, Mass., whose occupation is that of artist-jeweler. His excellent work in his chosen line has won for him an appointment from the Tiffany Foundation, which gives him the privileges of eight weeks residence at the beautiful estate of Louis Tiffany at Oyster Bay, L. I, where he will continue his study of jewelry, beginning Aug. 1. Mr. Oakes is already well known as one of the most successful artist-jewelers of the country through his work with the Boston Society of Arts and Crafts, where he is a member of the board of directors. He also has the distinction of being one of the very few living jewelers whose work has been purchased by the Metropolitan Museum in New York for its permanent collection. Mr. Oakes owns and occupies the attractive California-style bungalow which is situated at the high point of land on the Wakefield-Stoneham line, which has attracted much attention since its construction several years ago. Mr. Oakes is a member of Golden Rule Lodge, A. F. & A. M., and Reading Royal Arch Chapter.

Extensive preparations were made here by the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers to entertain Dr. George C. Kunz, vice-president of Tiffany & Co. of New York, who was scheduled to make an address before the members of the organization Oct. 31. The well-known gem expert was scheduled to speak on “Gems” in the University Club immediately following the dinner held before the engineers and invited guests.

Louis C. Tiffany, Vice-President of Tiffany & Co., New York, Still Active at Four Score Years

Louis C. Tiffany, vice-president of Tiffany & Co., which concern was founded by his father, art director of the Tiffany Studios, and president and art director of the Louis C. Tiffany Furnaces, was 80 years old last Saturday.

Mr. Tiffany, who is an artist and decorator, and is known in this country and abroad for his accomplishments in this direction, was born in New York on Feb. 18, 1848. He is the son of Charles Lewis Tiffany, a jeweler and goldsmith, and in his early life showed a strong inclination toward the fine arts. Mr. Tiffany studied with George Inness and Samuel Coleman, then with Leon Bailly in Paris. He spent five years in Europe and the Orient, and besides working in water colors and oils he has devoted much of his time to the subject of decorative arts.

Mr. Tiffany became interested in glass and its possibilities in the early 70’s and revived the mosaic theory in the construction of colored glass windows. In 1878 he organized a company under the title of Louis C. Tiffany and Associated Artists, for the purpose of promoting decorative arts in America and particularly developing the making of colored glass windows. The name of the concern has undergone several changes and now is more generally known as the Tiffany Studios.

Mr. Tiffany has completed many notable works in mosaic which are on public display in New York and other cities. He has worked successfully in tapestry, rugs and other materials, pottery, metallic lusters and enamels, and has given much thought to art in jewelry and silverware. During his lifetime he has been honored many times and has received many decorations for his art work.

In 1918 Mr. Tiffany established the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation for art students at Oyster Bay, N. Y., and deeded to it his entire collection of paintings, glass and other art objects, with Laurelton Hall, his country home, the Museum, Tiffany Chapel, and over 60 acres of land, together with a $1,000,000 fund, the income of which is to be used for the maintenance and operation of the foundation.
