Hi there,
I have an Art Deco shagreen cigarette case. It might be silver gilt - the only mark is the X shown. Is it possible that it is made of gold? Thanks
X symbol on Art Deco cigarette case
Re: X symbol on Art Deco cigarette case
Jan Diviš in his book Gold Stempel aus Aller Welt says Kharkiv also known as Kharkov the second-largest city in Ukraine, the assay office used a capital X since 7-5-1958.
But if it is gold you should expect a few more marks to indicate the gold fineness like 14K or an extra gold hallmark. I should have it tested to make sure the cigarette case is made out of a precious metal.
Peter.

Thanks Peter. This is the only other possible mark I can find but it’s hard to make out:

Your welcome, to me it appears your cigarette case to be made out of a non precious metal.
