Hello

The number is 600 and the stamp appears Egyptian although stamps on Egyptian silver normally comes in sets of three - fineness, city and year

According to https://www.silvercollection.it/EGYPTSI ... MARKS.html

"Originally the silver fineness was indicated in hundredths (two digits: 60, 80 and 90), later (possibly after 1975) silver fineness was expressed in thousandths (three digits: 600, 800 and 900)"

There are other members who are knowledgeable about Egyptian silver marks and perhaps they can help

Hope this is of interest

::::: I've always wondered about this because the "Egypt" section of the "World Marks" that you can click on above lists ".700" fineness which conflicts with the information given by the other website which does not list ".700" at all :::::: There seems to be a discrepancy between these 2 websites, unless I am misunderstanding :::::::::

Hello

Please check viewtopic.php?t=62455

The final image posted by Peter includes the marks for 90/900, 80/800 and 60/600 purity. There is no 700

I don't know much about the degrees of fineness in Egyptian silver but, is it possible that there has been some confusion about 600 and 700 because the "European" symbol for 7 is more or less the same as the Arabic symbol for 6?

Perhaps at some point 600 was read as 700 and accepted as fact

What do others think?

Hi Damon yes I agree, the Arabic symbol for 6 looks like the western (Arabic) figure 7.
Unfortunately the 925-1000 website is not without errors.

Peter.
