Brandy bowl, Groningen?

Post by Vantlicht »

Zilver brandybowl with a clear makersmark, looks like TP? I spend one hour in the book of Groningen, but cannot find any match. Help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

It is not a brandy bowl but a lobed basket with a, in my opinion it could be a pseudo mark, perhaps TB conjoined #343 in K.A. Citroen, Valse Zilvermererken In Nederland.

Peter, It was a former brandy bowl. They maked later a basket of it as far as I see.

I believe that it is no pseudomark. The bowl feels and smells original. The monogram looks like Gerardus ter Beeck. GTB but then the lower half of the B is missing. Maybe a misstruck?

The brandy bowl has been converted into a basket. The 16th century Groningen brandy bowls that I have seen did not have a folded edge but a straight sharp edge. On a Groningen brandy bowl you would also expect a city mark/date letter *.
In the Groningen Ommelanden ( country/surrounding areas) during the guild period only a master mark was struck: there are no date letters and neither is a (city) hallmark. The absence of a date letter does not exclude the city of Groningen as origin; if a precious metal object was sold on a provincial market, then hallmarking in the city was unnecessary*.
I do not believe it to be the maker's mark of Gerardus ter Beeck. For comparison, the master mark of Gerardus ter Beeck

Perhaps an other candidate.
Tonnis Brongers, a silversmith working in de Groningen city of Windschoten 1740......used a mark TB in monogram.
NB. The changes to the brandy bowl have major consequences.

Hi Peter, Could Timon Peters (Voet A26) 1558 - 1582 could be an option? Or is this too early?

Indeed, in my opinion to early. Again, at the end of the day, it is a former brandy bowl, without its "ears" converted into a basket.
