Silver? Tea caddy, hallmark is a K, shield 3 x's I think, S
Hi Trev.
I am sorry, my friend doesn't know how to make the image any bigger.
He just said " I am sorry I tried to enlarge, I guess I am too old to operate these new gadgets 100% It is a shield kind of looks like three little x's in it, but not 100% sure."
So a K then the shield and then a S.
Sorry Jayne

Teacaddy - maybe Hanau, but not Röll & Stephan?
Hello
Johanna Gehrlein report in her book »Rosen-Bestecke« (look: http://www.rosen-bestecke.de" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) on Röll, Stephan & Co. (predecessor founded maybe 1929; founded maybe 1934) on p. 120: »Eine Firmenkennzeichnung konnte nicht gefunden werden.« - A company's mark wasn't found.
Shown photo isn't sufficient informative for to could see details of maker’s mark.
Kind regards silverport

Tea-Caddy
Hello,
I am shure, the Tea Caddy is made in the Area of Hanau.
As Silverport posted correctly, I didnt found any mark for Röll & Stephan. And if they had choosen any mark, they would not have combined the Coat of Arms of Hanau and Großkrotzenburg. Because the companies of this towns worked in strong competition.
The next reason for having no company-mark is the dimension of the company. Small companies sold their products to a wholesaler and mostly they marked the goods with the mark of the wholesaler.
A further reason, why I dont believe, its the mark of Röll & Stephan ist the number below the mark. This number is a modell-number and has been used in this combination with a mark for registered modells. I havent found any registered modells for Röll & Stephan. This was at all time a very small company and the registration of modells was expensive.
The mark could also be the mark of a (foreign) wholesaler or of a retailer.
Kindly regqards,
Johanna

Re: Silver? Tea caddy, hallmark is a K, shield 3 x's I think
I have been researching high and low to figure this out as well. I bought a set of salt and pepper shakers from an auction. They have the same emblems and what looks like a 5 digit registration code maybe below it. The "K" is the first emblem on it and I matched the shape perfectly with a London date code from 1805. The only problem is that it does not have the duty stamp or content stamp. It actually says this K in a square and then another square that has what looks like a shield or maybe an upside down bell. In it, it has 2 x's side by side and then a chevron and then 1 x below that, then the next figure is an S inside of a square. Below these three marks it has a 5 digit model or registration number. 83590. I have included a few pictures. If anyone knows or can recognize anything on it, I would love to be able to date it and tell where it was from and who made it. I am going to try to post a pic of it.

Not able to check any references at the moment (and, if I recall correctly, it doesn't appear in any of mine), but have seen that mark a number of times on "Dutch Revival" silverplate pieces like shakers, candlesticks, vases, tea caddies, etc., believe all have had similar 5-digit production codes - they look to be American, 1920ish. Suspect it might be an unascribed mark for Knickerbocker Silver Co., but that would just be a guess.....

I have been trying to figure out how to post the picture I have of the marks for this. It is a little bit clearer picture. Any ideas? There seems to be no way to upload or copy and paste one. I would love to see if someone can identify it.

I know the topic is quite old, but I just came across a silver buckle with a three x hallmark. However, I do have a good photo of it:

Hopefully this will help identify it!
Thanks :)

Re:
New here but I have what looks to be a pencil holder (?) with this same mark on is - K and S on either side of a shield with Xes in it. Numbers below on my piece are 83637. Both K and S are very clear and proportions distinct. Bas relief on sides.dognose wrote:
Any clues as to manufacturer? Thank you.

Re: Silver? Tea caddy, hallmark is a K, shield 3 x's I think
Here's a couple of sites.
http://www.pewtersociety.org/pewter/britannia-metal
http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/top ... nnia-metal
I may have some helpful information. I believe that these are from the mid to late 1800's. The metal is silver plated Britannia. It's similar to pewter but no lead. In my search I discovered that these pieces are marked indicating the thickness of the plating. The 3 x's, I believe, is the thickness. The "K" is the year time period. The "S" is probably the manufacturer. My piece is 83632. I believe that's a year and model mark. (1) 836= 1836. 32 would be the model.
