silver strainer
Hello again!
There are three marks on this strainer. the left one I think is a lion type of mark? Sorry thats the best I can do! The middle one is I think a city mark for Roermond (lily) and then the right one is something like a written 't' or 'i' with a small v (van?) and then an 'R'? I assume this is the makers mark and I also assume that maybe this is 18th Century or before 1814?
A lot of asumptions here but maybe some expert can help me with some more positive id as this is different from any other dutch silver marks I have come across. Thanks once again in anticipation of your help.
Re: silver strainer
Hi,
Can’t say much because your photo does not show any sharp details. Your lion rampant, going left, without a crown, does not look to be a valid Dutch province/city hallmark.
Your ‘lily’ has not the right shape to be the city hallmark for Roermond pre 1814.
I believe your strainer could have been made in Hanau Germany, around the end of the 19th start 20th century.
Regards,
Oel

Hi Groningberg,
Take a look at this page to see if any of the marks match up:

Hi Groninberg,
The mark on the right looks pretty much like the maker's mark of Wolf & Knell (see ref given by dognose abose).

Dinio

Thanks Trev, Dinio and Oel
All three of you are right! I agree it is Hanau silver and fits the marks you have mentioned. It is not a place I would have started looking...I guess they fooled them them as they they do now! I think anyone starting out on silver collecting must first of all have a crash course in Hanau silver as a pre-requisite to anything else :) Thanks once again on my steep (but still enjoyable) learning curve.
