84 zolotniki 1844

Post by dolpheus »

Hello,
can somebody help me with these marks (russian?) identification? Especially city mark (double headed crowned eage over date) for 1844 i can not find.
It is all OK, or it can be a fake? Better images, and from entire object, i don't have this time, sorry.
Thanks
M.

Hi -
the fakers tried to kind of reproduce the townmark of Minsk, in use until 1848. The assay master ПГ, on duty 1844 -1848 is until today unknown.
A simple fake.

Can you see the traces of file — original hallmarks were removed and Russian hallmarks struck over? The scratches are too deep to be attributed to cleaning. Once again, only hallmarks are given, the easiest way to make a mistake — even with the picture, sometimes it is difficult to identify a genuine item. Another question is if the particular item worth faking, although, if one paid a lot for steel hallmarking tool he would strike fake marks on every possible item to make profit.

Hi Argentum49 -
you are right with your conclusions. Please remember that many of the fakes are manufactured in countries with cheap manpower! So there is a big profit at the end.
And do not forget: not all things with the stamp 84 are real silver!
