london mark?

Post by ruthw »

I have been trying to identify the marks on my punch ladle.
At first I thought it looked like a bell, w, lion passant, and ??
When I turn it over though, could it be possible that the "bell" is the crowned leopard head?
Could the stamps have not been all stamped "right side up"?

Thanks for any insight!

Hi Ruth,

Yes, Leopard head Crowned and the date letter M could be for 1747-48.
Maker’s mark I can’t identify. Let us wait for others to comment.

Certainly the Lion Passant is guardant and the punch looks like the 1740 -1756 London one , so 1747/48 is probably correct.

Stab in the dark - George Ridout 1743 (noted in Jackson's for a double-handled double-spouted sauce ladle)
