Hello,
I've found this site in hopes of identifying the maker of a silver vase that I purchased as a gift. I'm in the US so, with no other information, I'm beginning with the assumption it is American ... hence the post here. There is a mark which resembles a British GBP symbol (£), the number 2861 and the words 'sterling' and 'weighted' which seem to be overstamped or doublestamped. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Take a look at the La Pierre mark here: http://www.925-1000.com/americansilver_L.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I think the earliest La Pierre trademark best resembles yours.

Thanks silverly. That's the closest one I have seen. I would like to find an example with the L letter in a circle ... so far I haven't found it.
Another question. Should this piece be polished? I've been told that might hurt the value as an antique. Thanks again for your reply!

Here's an earlier post with your mark: http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10050" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Holloware is not like coins. For my money it should be cleaned. The build up of oxidation and grime will eat into the metal. I'm not one for over polishing, but silver wares should be kept clean and once the worst is cleaned off of them I think they should be just lightly polished as needed.
