Folding spoon

Post by amena »

I have a double folding spoon marked The Metcalf co. New York.
I would like to know if it is a different mark of Campbell-Metcalf Co silver or if it is another company.
Thanks

"Rainwater" shows Campbell, Metcalf going into business in 1892 and being declared insolvent in 1898 (JC & HR 6-8-1898). This fits well with the Providence, Rhode Island Business Directory entries for the company.

Metcalf Co is listed at 5 E 35th in 1915 New York City Directory under silversmiths, and at least for now, I have no other listings for them.

In my opinion, there is a connection even it is only in the parties involved in the earlier company. I will do some more looking.

Campbell-Metcalf of Providence, RI, was founded in 1892 by Ernest W. Campbell and Joseph M. Metcalf; The Metcalf Co. of New York, NY, was founded in the early 1900s by James A. Metcalf, a silversmith who worked for Meriden Britannia and Simpson, Hall, MIller (International Silver) before forming his own company. Suppose there may be some sort of family connection, but not a particularly uncommon surname...
