What is this object?

Post by silvercrown »

I found this object in a lot of old sterling flatware pieces at an estate auction. I have no idea what it is. It is approximately 6" long overall. The tip is very sharp and pointy. It is marked only "Sterling" with no maker's mark. Can anyone help? Thanks as always!

Could be. The blade is round...is that typical of the period? Thanks for your response.

It's a stiletto, used for sewing and needlework. For working holes in material, manipulating thread and fabric edges, turning sharp corners, laying tool for woolwork, stuffing trapunto, etc. I have several in my sewing box made of bone or bone handled, sizes from 2¼" to 6"

Cheryl, thank you very much. How interesting. I thought it might be a sewing item of some kind, but since I don't and can't sew, I was stymied. I appreciate the information.
