I found this adorable little orphan while cleaning out an 18th century home in downtown Lancaster, PA the other day. I looked through the materials here, and it "seems" to be Sheffield and the date 1788, but my familiarity with British silver is not that good so I'm seeking more informed opinions. It measures 10.3 cm in length.
I also find it curious that a sterling piece has no maker's mark that I can find. Might it have been on the missing handle? Anyone hazard who the maker might have been? If it is indeed from Sheffield and 1788, I plan to create a "make-do" handle for it and use it at period gatherings.
Thanks in advance!
