Francois-Alphonse Debain
Francois-Alphonse Debain
Hi All,
I have recently purchased a cruet stand and I was wondering if anyone can tell me anything about it? The Stand has a diamond mark on the bottom with the word DEBAIN in it and what appears to be two little men in a boat.
I think the stand may be by Francois-Alphonse Debain but I dont know if it is silver or silver plate. I can not see a head of Minerve stamp next to the DEBAIN stamp but could it still be silver? could i be looking for the stamp in the wrong place?
Thanks in advance
Nick
PS. How do I put photos on here?

Hi,
While your taking photos, look for the Minerva mark around the upper rims of the stand.

Hi,
Here are three images from the cruet stand.
Does anyone know what the mark is in ?

Hi Nick,
If you look directly opposite the second mark, which is an anvil (bigorne) mark, you will find (if it's not worn away) the Minerva mark.

Hi Trev,
Thank you so much. I now have a Minerva mark. Couldn't have done it without your help.
I am amazed that I bought this at a car boot sale
Regards
Nick

Re: Francois-Alphonse Debain
Sorry for digging up this old post but I was looking for a date when this mark was used:
I am a little bit confused as one mark (exactly the same) was used in different periods? Trev says 1847-1864 and 1911-1916 (http://www.925-1000.com/Ffrench_makers_D.html). Any ideas about the mark above? Thank you!

A similar mark appears to have been used by several members of the family.

Re: Francois-Alphonse Debain
I think the two listings copied by AG2012 did not match my mark. The symbol of the two Debians is a pheonix...

Re: Francois-Alphonse Debain
The pictures are gone from here http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic ... ain#p44001 but I assume this refers to that mark "It’s actually an earlier mark, that of Debain’s grandfather, Francsois-Alphonse Debain. It was registered on 15 Jan 1847, renewed on 19 Jul 1851, and cancelled on 27 May 1864. The device — “un nacelle et deux petits hommes” [“a skiff with two little men”] - was also used in the mark of his son and successor, Alphonse-Edouard Debain in his partnership with Louis-Frédéric Flamant, working as Debain & Flamant, 1864-1880. The firm was succeeded by Flamant’s heirs as Flamant & Fils, 1880-1891."
