Need help with some Sterling 600 candle stick holders

Post by RyanAG »

Hello forum. New user here. I found two old candle stick holders that my mom had that she received from her grandparents. I'm going to assume that these are about 100 years old.

I've been doing my research now for hours and not able to come up with much. The hallmark symbols are

-an "R" in a circle that is written very fancy and looks like a knights helmet in a circle possibly
-an "H" inside a shield pattern
-a lion symbol in a square box

Then the words:
"STERLING"
"WEIGHED"
"600"

From all the digging I've been doing I've found that the number "600" points to be of Arabic origin. I've seen Egypt, Palestine, Israel, and other nations from around there with 600 stamped also. That would make sense because the pieces are stamped "WEIGHED" instead of 'WEIGHTED" so error in translation?

I have a good idea that the first symbol of the "R" should be the maker, the "H" date code and the lion a sterling mark (of British origin maybe). I haven't been able to identify any of these symbols as of yet. But I've been searching for a few hours now.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Pictures are below.

Trev,

Thanks for the response. I scoured that info you posted in hopes to find my solution then noticed almost the entire resource is for US silver resources. I'm looking for something that's probably going to be international and rare. I look forward to any other additional info anyone has to offer. Am I right to assume the 600 states a country in the regions I've been finding?

It was made by the Hunt Silver Co. of N.Y. and Chicago. A fairly common console candle holder, of thin, spun sterling with a pitch filling (weighed). The 600 is a model number. The thinness of the metal explains the slight twist that has happened on the base near the narrowness of the neck. Someone polishing it held too tightly as they spun it in one hand and it torqued the metal leaving it damaged.
