Yes, the mark does look the same.

The Nicholsons were in business between c. 1756 and c. 1830 with the partnership of John and Nicholas Nicholson in existence between 1797 and 1804.

Joseph Gibson was in business 1784 to about 1820.

However, the common use of this punch by the Nicholsons and Gibson may be connected to the fact that Joseph Gibson married a daughter of John Nicholson on 3 June 1788 and he may have been apprenticed to the same John Nicholson.

If so, it may be another example of the intermarriage of Cork silversmiths and a hint as to their business practices.

Is there any professional or family relationship between the two makers?

I came across this mark recently and it was ascribed to George Hodder. However, I had not seen it before and it looks a little out of character for Cork STERLING marks. Would anyone have an example from a piece we know to have been made by George Hodder?

I have this George Hodder maker's and STERLING marks from a caster I own but the STERLING mark is not very clear on it.

The maker's mark is very clear and not at all like the mark accompanying the STERLING mark.

I am told the item the mark is on is a flat covered dish with a crest and a motto. The motto is Ne vante ne foiblesse. As far as I can see this belogs to a Norman family - Goddes de Varennes.

Could anyone comment on the "H H" makers mark?

Two different STERLING punches used, both likely dating to around the same period just after the partnership commenced in 1806. Silver items are extant with Dublin marks for 1807 and after but it's not clear if there was a definite date beyond which all silver was sent to Dublin to be assayed or whether there was an overlap between STERLING marked and Dublin marked items.
